One of their most touching traditions is the Halo Hall of Fame, a make-shift ceremony that honors children undergoing halo traction—a treatment for severe scoliosis—with a giant portrait in their honor.
In a recent video shared by the hospital on social media, 4-year-old Phoenix graces the “red carpet” on her wheelchair and excitedly pulls down a sparkly piece of fabric to reveal her smiling portrait. The heartwarming moment captures her beaming with pride at being featured alongside other children who have undergone the same treatment.
Phoenix’s Halo Hall of Fame day came after spending 49 days in halo traction, a specialized treatment that uses a metal ring attached to the head to gently straighten the spine over time. This method helps correct severe spinal deformities, such as scoliosis, in preparation for a more complex surgery. Thanks to the hospital’s treatment and care, Phoenix—and other kids like her—will likely go on to live a fulfilling life.
“Our Halo Program delivers life-changing results for patients with severe scoliosis,” explains Shriners. “Using traction created by spring-loaded technology, patient’s spines are gently straightened over weeks or months. This gradual process increases the chance for surgical success in the operation that follows.”
The thoughtful Halo Hall of Fame tradition helps children feel celebrated for their bravery, and reminds them that they’re not alone. Recently, other kids welcomed into the collection include Aaron, who arrived at his ceremony dressed as Batman, and Evan, who made his grand entrance onto the red carpet in a toy car.
