At just 3 years old, Scout Penelope has already acquired an impressive arsenal of strong female role models. In her empowering series of inspirational photographs, the little girl emulates the women she looks up to, from well-known celebrities to her cancer survivor grandma.
In each look-a-like picture, Scout successfully attempts to reinterpret photographs of female figures. To aptly capture the feel of the original images, she dresses up and poses just like her subjects, who include iconic artist Frida Kahlo, beloved actress Carrie Fisher, animated Pixar heroine Moana, and even “Nonnie” (her grandma), whose recent battles with cancer actually inspired the series. “When Nonnie’s hair started to fall out, Scout got very concerned and I wanted to put both of our minds at ease,” Scout’s mother, Ashley Lardon, explains on Bored Panda. “I needed to teach her and remind myself that women are fighters! We chose famous & fierce women to teach her about the strength that women have.”
In addition to helping little Scout cope with her family’s struggles, the inspirational photos also cheered up Nonnie (who is now cancer free!) and, perhaps most unexpectedly, even taught Scout’s mom some surprising lessons. “This project has probably taught me just as much or more than it taught my daughter,” Larson confesses. “I truly want Scout to be able to look back at this and know that women are just as strong as any man. And to be quite honest, my fingers are crossed that by the time she’s old enough to understand the strength she’s portraying- women won’t be seen as delicate and dainty anymore, anyway. And I hope that when Scout looks back on this, she is proud of who she is and who she will become.”
