Before I Die…

With Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the BP oil spill in 2010, New Orleans has endured some really tough times. One could only imagine how hard it would be to stay upbeat when tragedy constantly surrounds you.

Candy Chang, a public installation artist, designer, and urban planner, decided to turn a negative into a positive. With the help of friends, she transformed the side of an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard where residents can fill in the blank and remember what is important to them in life.

“It’s also about turning a neglected space into a constructive one where we can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around us,” she says. “It turns out this entire process has been a great lesson, experience, and project in itself. The responses and stories from passers-by while we were installing it have already hit me hard in the heart.”
