The show The Simpsons in one of the longest running series on TV, as its first episode aired in 1989. While its early episodes hold a perennial, timeless feel, writers have incorporated modern-day issues in more recent seasons. But what if this wacky animated family dated back to even earlier? YouTube user demonflyingfox wondered about this themself and decided to turn The Simpsons into a 1950s sitcom with the help of AI.
To truly achieve the aesthetic of mid-century TV, demonflyingfox envisioned The Simpsons as if shot with a Super Panavision 70 film camera. These were first introduced in the late 1950s to offer an enhanced visual experience, and were used in movies such as West Side Story (1961), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and My Fair Lady (1964).
While a good chunk of it falls in the uncanny valley of AI, it’s interesting to see these beloved characters through these retro filters. Homer looks like a more somber, balding guy, while Marge’s towering blue hair is transformed into a far more modestly tall updo of the era. Meanwhile, the children’s spiky hair is re-envisioned as locks of golden hair.
The main Simpson family characters aren’t the only ones that have been reinterpreted either. Demonflyingfox visualizes other characters through a retro lens, like Homer’s boss, Mr. Burns, and some of his drinking pals, including Moe and Barney. The Simpsons’ cheerful neighbor, Ned Flanders, seems to fit right in this 1950s aesthetic with his mustache and thick-rimmed glasses. We also get a glimpse of Milhouse, Nelson, Apu, Sideshow Bob, and Krusty the Clown—whose spookier appearance maybe wouldn’t get him as many young fans in this universe.
