Artist Lino Tagliapietra was born to make glass. Born on Venice’s glassblowing island Murano, Tagliapietra was just 12 years old when he began apprenticing in the workshop of famous glassmaker Archimede Seguso. Now in his late 80s, Tagliapietra is world-renowned in his own right and, through his teaching, has helped spread Venice’s glassblowing techniques around the globe. A new book by Phaidon’s Monacelli imprint pays homage to this master of glass’ 70-year career.

Lino Tagliapietra: Sculptor in Glass is the most comprehensive monograph ever written about Tagliapietra’s work. It shows how he has carried on Murano’s 500-year tradition of glass-making and stretched the limits of the craft. A true sculptor, Tagliapietra’s work proves that when technical skill and a creative mind merge, the possibilities are endless.

Across more than 200 pages, new images of Tagliapietra’s glass sculptures shine a light on his unparalleled skill and the depth of his repertoire. Additionally, there are insightful texts by curator and former Museum of Arts and Design in New York director Glenn Adamson and art history professor Henry Adams of Case Western Reserve University which help place Tagliapietra’s work in its rightful context.

The volume is an incredible tribute to Tagliapietra’s genius and the man who moved from producing commercial glass to pieces of fine art that are coveted by collectors around the world.
