Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa, who is known for his monumental installations, revisits a more intimate setting in an exhibition called Murmuri. Even the exhibition’s title, which translates from Catalan to “murmurs” or “whispers,” points to the personal nature of the work. Through a series of sculptures and works on paper, Plensa gives visitors a clear look at his impressive oeuvre and his ability to transform materials.

Two sculptures from Plensa’s Nest series anchor the show. These alabaster sculptures, with faces half emerging from rough stone, demonstrate the artist’s mastery of stonework and provide contrast to the sleek bronze busts on display. Plensa’s ability to work with these classic materials, demonstrating their meaning and power even in contemporary times, speaks volumes of his artistic prowess.

Additionally, Murmuri includes three Murano glass sculptures, four works on paper, and several studies for monumental sculptures. Viewed within the context of the gallery, these pieces focus on Plensa’s predilection for finding beauty in simplicity. In doing so, he creates a tranquil, inviting space for visitors to meditate on his art.

“Whispers, like Plensa’s sculptures, are presented as delicate expressions but charged with emotional intensity, capable of resonating in those who perceive them,” states the gallery. “This exhibition invites the viewer to listen to what is not said, reaffirming Plensa’s commitment to an aesthetic that celebrates both the fragility and the depth of the human experience.”

Murmuri, which opened on February 19, is currently on view at Barcelona’s Galeria SENDA. For more from the artist, follow Jaume Plensa on Instagram.
