Have you ever wondered how history’s famous artists would look like if they were alive today? This is the concept for the work of Tel-Aviv-based illustrator Amit Shimoni, who has reimagined iconic artists such as Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh as if they were modern-day hipsters. His colorful portrait paintings are part of his ongoing series, aptly called HIPSTORY.
Shimoni has previously transformed world leaders from buttoned-up professionals into bohemian freethinkers. His newest hipster interpretations tackle the world of fine art, including the likes of Salvador Dalí who is comically styled with his hair in a “man bun” while his famous quote “I don’t do drugs. I am drugs” is seen tattooed on his chest. A hipster Vincent van Gogh is depicted wearing an AirPod and a patterned shirt featuring his own Sunflowers motif, while Pablo Picasso similarly wears his own Guernica-patterned shirt. An inked Frida Kahlo is depicted wearing a nose ring and her hair in braided pigtails cascades from her flower crown. Meanwhile, Andy Warhol wears classic horn-rimmed glasses and is clad in tattoos of his famous friends, including Marilyn Monroe and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
You can see more from Shimoni’s HIPSTORY series on Instagram and buy your favorite hipster icons as prints via the artist’s website.
