Fans of both board games and art can now enjoy them at the same time thanks to the company Today is Art Day. Known for their charming artist action figures, creator David Beaulieu has produced yet another fun way to interact with art history. Called The Grand Museum of Art, the table game challenges you to “live the life of a curator” and build a collection that attracts throngs of visitors—ultimately saving your fictitious institution from bankruptcy. The player/curator who proves the most successful will become the Museum Director.
To play, each curator must gain “popularity points” by collecting famous artworks and presenting thematic exhibitions. They do this by a few means, two of which are legitimate ways that real museums build their acquisitions—exchanging pieces and bidding in auctions. But if a player is feeling particularly dastardly, they can even steal from their fellow curators; it’s all in an effort to achieve the highest popularity points.
Included in The Grand Museum of Art box are 65 artwork cards, 20 thematic exhibition cards, a trivia booklet that includes 130 questions, and four game tokens inspired by famous sculptures like Rodin’s Thinker.
After two years of development, The Grand Museum of Art is now available for pre-order thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign. You have until August 19 to reserve your copy.
