Have you ever asked for a trim at the salon but left with a buzz cut? Or know all too well what it’s like to face the day without your morning coffee? Barcelona-based cartoon artist Nacho Diaz Arjona (aka Naolito) cleverly illustrates these relatable scenarios in a series of before and after illustrations. The artist’s cute cartoon drawings personify food, nature, and other ordinary objects and inject some humor into those awkward daily moments.
Rendered digitally with a drawing tablet and Photoshop, Naolito first sketches out countless ideas. He then looks back at them after a few weeks and if he still finds them funny, he refines them into finished illustrations. Naolito explains, “I enjoy looking for similarities between people and objects, animals, and food. I think it’s a really interesting way to represent ideas.” By using everyday objects, Naolito is able to exaggerate each relatable emotional shift. For example, “before college” is illustrated as a jovial, bright-eyed Game Boy, while “after college” is depicted as a weary, debt-totaling calculator.
If you love these adorable illustrations, you can buy them as prints, t-shirts, and other merchandise on Naolito’s website.
