Watercolor painting can seem like alchemy, and few artists showcase a mastery of the art better than Cindy Lane. Through mesmerizing videos, the Australian creative hypnotizes millions of people with her gorgeous painting process videos. Her work-in-progress showcases the carefree fluidity of the medium. With just a bit of water and a little pigment, her paintbrush is akin to a magic wand that makes hues suddenly appear with a feather-like quality. The results culminate in ocean-inspired paintings that are as sunny as her disposition.
As you watch Cindy’s videos, it makes you want to break out your own painting tools and put pigment to paper. We spoke to Cindy about some of her favorite watercolor supplies that she uses to paint. She’ll even show you how to use them with the opportunity to work right alongside her!
On March 25, she will be broadcasting a live event on the My Modern Met Facebook page. She’ll demonstrate painting at least a couple of projects over the course of about an hour and talk through what’s she’s doing. So whether you’re a first-time watercolor artist or a seasoned pro, you’re sure to discover something new through Cindy.
Cindy lives by the beach in Perth, Australia, and she’ll be broadcasting on March 25 at 9 a.m. AWST. If you’re in the United States, settle in for some painting fun on March 24 at 9 p.m. EDT.
Cindy shared what she will be using while she paints. Here are some of her favorite watercolor supplies:
Three sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper. Look for 300lb (640gsm) that’s 100% cotton. The surface texture is up to you, but you’ll want to work on a minimum of 8 inches by 10 inches or 11 inches by 14 inches.
Watercolor paints. “I’ll be using a variety of artist quality paints, like Da Vinci and Daniel Smith, with some of their iridescent sparkly ones as well.” But, if you don’t have those, that’s okay—even children’s paints will work in a pinch.
Paint palette. You can use a plastic palette or a porcelain dinner plate.
Watercolor brushes. Cindy recommends brushes with “soft, springy hair.” Avoid “stiff hog bristle oil brushes.” Also, you’ll want to go for variety. “All round or mop type brushes, no flats will be required.”
Two water containers.
Graphite pencils. A water-soluble graphite pencil is ideal for drawing the design on the paper. Alternatively, you can use a hard HB pencil.
Posca white pigment marker or white gel pen.
See you on March 24/March 25! Be sure to follow My Modern Met on Facebook so you won’t miss Cindy’s inspiring painting instruction.
