Embroidery Artist “Paints” Colorful Landscape Scenes With Thread

A post shared by Веруня (@shimunia) on

Over the past few years, we’ve seen many artists creatively pushing the boundaries of embroidery. While some adopt the traditional craft to render simple line work, others use thread to create expressive brushstroke textures and painterly blends of color. One artist to have perfected the hybrid craft of embroidery painting is Russian artist Vera Shimunia. Her painterly embroidery designs are pieces of landscape art, expertly stitched with colorful thread.

Using various stitches, Shimunia manages to capture the vibrant beauty of nature. Lazy daisy flowers and french knot buds fill embroidered meadows, and the colors of mountains, fields, and seascapes blend together like oil on canvas. One of the most impressive features of Shimunia’s work is her colorful skies. Whether it’s swirls of clouds or streams of sun rays, Shimunia depicts her sky scenes with vivid colors and rich textures.

While most of Shimunia’s embroidered landscape scenes are small in size, she also creates teeny tiny pieces that aren’t much bigger than your finger tip. Some of the artist’s latest work even merges textile art with photography to create stunning surreal landscapes that are part photo-landscape, part embroidery-sky.

You can find more of Shimunia’s work on Instagram, and purchase her embroidery designs on Etsy.
