Suzan Drummen shows a keen eye for detail with her dazzling kaleidoscopic floor installations that take on a three-dimensional form with their complexity. This Netherlands-based artist works with thousands of individual elements, placed loosely about the floor, or fixed onto walls with pins; occasionally, bedazzled participants aid in forming these lively illusions. Her pieces are constructed from crystal, chrome-plated metal, precious stones, mirrors and optical glass.
Drummen states that her goal is to stimulate and challenge our visual perception with pieces that “from a distance appear clear and orderly, yet upon closer inspection, [cause] the eyes [to] become disoriented by the many details and visual stimuli.” Her works are unique in their own right, pushing the limits between attractive and garish, vaguely reminiscent of meticulously patterned textile creations, such as an oriental rug that borders on pleasing and over-the-top.
These ornate installations are eye-catching and hypnotic as the thousands of individual components meld together to compose something playful and larger than life.
