Turkey-based electrical engineer and graphic designer Tolga Girgin puts a unique twist on the art of calligraphy with his beautifully scripted letters that appear three-dimensional. Many of his creations may look like they were crafted from strips of paper that were cut and folded to pop off the page, but the words are all hand-drawn, anamorphic illusions that rely on carefully rendered shadows and flat forms viewed from exact perspectives.
Similar to his previous 3D lettering works, Girgin’s recent images were rendered using Pilot parallel pens, brush pens, and pencils on blanks sheets of paper. The artist continues to play with words and their meanings represented visually, as can be seen from examples like the slashed word “cut,” a clever illustration of “zigzag,” and a seemingly floating “pillar” supported by thin posts. Both playful and elegantly minimalist, Girgin’s experimental scripts put a modern spin on calligraphy.
