At first glance, it appears that these plates, from the series titled Landscape Multiple, are traditional porcelain dinner plates covered with elaborate, painted designs. In reality, though, each piece is a stack of ceramic, perfectly layered together to create a delightfully surprising three-dimensional scene.
Helsinki-based artist Caroline Slotte carves and sands through stacked dinner plates to create each piece in the collection. By removing sections of the original designs, she creates uniquely overlapping floral patterns and landscape scenes that merge together into one original narrative. Her artist statement explains, “Demonstrating an engaged sensitivity towards the associations, memories, and narratives inherent in the objects, Slotte’s intricate physical interventions allows us to see things we would otherwise not have seen.”
