The world is completely different when viewed from high up in the sky. Though we can’t always experience these types of spectacular scenes in person, Melbourne-based photographer Tom Blachford provides viewers with a unique perspective of the world through his collection of captivating aerial shots.
To document such breathtaking places, Blachford flies above Melbourne in an open-door helicopter and photographs the landscapes below. From single boats floating in a sea of rippling water to rows and rows of parked cars, Blachford captures the repetitive shapes, patterns, and symmetry of everyday life throughout the city. His keen eye sees objects as clean lines that appear quite organized as well as scattered dots of people on a beach that somehow appear purposeful in their haphazard placement along the sand.
When speaking about his experience, Blachford said, “I saw another side to everything. Some buildings I would never think of shooting from the ground may have had incredible patterned roofs or arrays of panels that created amazing patterns. Some amazing buildings I love to shoot from the ground were a mess of cables and units from above.”
