Oil Paintings of San Francisco Lit Up at Night

It’s easy to get lost in the chaos of a busy city. In this series called Concrete, artist Xiau-Fong Wee takes us on a journey into the rush of urban life. Each scene is a snapshot right out of San Francisco area nightlife, transformed into a detailed oil painting. Lights from buildings, cars, and street lamps are difficult to distinguish from the surrounding darkness.

As our minds fill in the gaps to complete the compositions, the extraordinary pieces show exactly how a story can be told with just light. The amazing amount of detail brought forth by the shiny reflections reveal an almost plastic, disorienting sensation that transports us to what the artist describes as “an alternate dimension.”

Wee says, “The challenge is to connect what is unknown with what is familiar and create an altered view of aesthetics.”
