Lick is an ongoing portrait series by Connecticut-based photographer Ty Foster that captures dogs while they’re licking their own face. Like Carli Davidson’s Shake series, Foster’s project takes a quick snapshot of these lovable pooches as they’re in the middle of a very normal activity for a dog–in this case, quickly wagging their pink tongues out for a lick. Through these images, the dog-loving photographer manages to catch a sense of personality in each eagerly slobbering canine’s face that is all at once adorable, funny, and kind of gross.
The project, which Foster first started about a year ago, began as a simple, straightforward portraiture collection. The photographer never intended to expand the series the way he has with casting calls requesting as many dog breeds as possible and the anticipation of a book, but the response has been very encouraging. While the publication is still in the works, Foster will be updating fans of Lick on the progress of the project through his blog and Facebook. In the meantime, we can enjoy the first set of portraits featuring 10 different dogs with their tongues out.
