Do you have photos on Facebook that define who you are? Or perhaps they’re ones you wish no one had ever seen….Dina Litovsky has undertaken a journey of the New York City nighlife: clubs, lounges, bars and parties. For the past few years, she has photographed these places to examine how women have been influenced by new technologies, specifically digital cameras like the iPhone and social networking sites.
Her area of expertise is the photographic examination of social performances and group interactions in both public and private spaces. Litovsky has noticed that more women are aiding their own objectification while maintaining control over their image. “The women photographed are not just permitting but actually performing for the camera; it connects them, the virtual exhibitions, to a vast anonymous audience,” says Litovsky. This summer, her photos of such women will be on display at the PRC’s EXPOSURE 2011 exhibit at Boston University. It opens on July 21 and will close August 21.
