Striking Photos Reveal What Horses Look Like From Below

After charming us with his adorable photos of the underbellies of cats, Lithuanian photographer Andrius Burba is back with a new series of Underlook photographs. This time, he’s captured the underbelly of our equine friends with Under-Horse.

Each horse is set against a stark black background, which allows us to focus on the striking, muscular beauty of the animals. Leaping gleefully, it’s impossible not to feel the energy that radiates off the images. However, photographing these large, graceful horses wasn’t an easy feat.

The project took two months, with over 40 people assisting. “As I started to organize the photoshoot of a horse, I knew that all I needed is to get 600 kg horse on a glass, dig 3 meters into the ground, put my camera under a big glass, and take a shot,” Burba reveals. “I have found horse-friendly environment[s] and even made rubber horseshoes, to save the glass from scratching.”

Burba’s tenacity paid off in the results. Stretching and bending their muscular bodies, each horse is magnificently captured in a manner that highlights their individual personalities. With a knack for demonstrating the power and joy of the horses, Burba has taken his successful series to a new level.

Want a piece of Under-Horse at home? Burba is selling limited edition prints that will also go toward helping his next goal for the series, Under-Tiger.

In the end, the two month creative process was well worth the final results! Next, Burba plans to tackle a more dangerious animal—tigers.
