Energetic Photo Series Captures Expressive Movements Mid-Air

For his final project at the University of East London, Lithuania-born photographer Tomas Januska spent seven months exploring what it might feel like to live in a world of weightlessness. His black and white series, entitled Gravity, features individuals as they enjoy the freedom of floating in mid-air.

Januska photographed both dancers and ordinary people who jumped for the camera between 150 to 600 times during a single photo shoot. He captured the energy and expressive movements of his subjects as they moved and twisted in the air.

He used a simple, white background to eliminate any expectations of what is right-side-up and what is upside-down. By removing any solid point of reference, the photographer created an illusion of indefinite space where subjects simply float. “I wanted my final project for my BA to capture a sense of movement, life and freedom,” explains Januska. “People are moving less and less, so I wanted to show what they are missing out on.”
