Architect Tom Kundig is known for his stunning homes that create a close connection with nature. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Kundig’s practice has designed homes across the globe, from houses built into rocky terrain to pieces of moving architecture that travel on railroad tracks. Now, four decades of these incredible homes have come together in a richly illustrated book published by Phaidon.
Tom Kundig: Complete Houses brings together 462 of the architect’s residential projects across 600 pages. This comprehensive overview of the architect’s career is also a glimpse into his creative process. More than a simple showcase for photographs of gorgeous homes, the book is interspersed with Kundig’s drawings, revealing how his work moves from concept to finished piece. In addition, several “conversations” with the book’s editor, Dung Ngo, shine light on Kundig’s early influences, collaborators, and formative years as an architect.
“The concept of home stirs something visceral within us, a memory older than words, a truth we carry in our bones. Spaces that hold us, shelter us, and, in the quietest of ways, become a part of who they are,” Kundig writes in the book’s preface. “I have always believed that the best houses feel inevitable, as if they have always been there. They gather time, weaving into their surroundings, weathered by the slow forces of nature.”
Kundig’s work shows just how important architecture is in creating a haven for us to rest our heads. Far beyond cookie-cutter, his innovative design creates homes that are warm, cozy, and contemporary. Tom Kundig: Complete Houses is a must-read for any lover of architecture and design and is available on Amazon and Bookshop.org.
Architect Tom Kundig’s incredible work is being celebrated in a 600-page monograph.
