Nighttime Self-Portraits Under the Northern Lights Reveal a Vast Universe in the Sky

Against majestic backgrounds of infinite stars and the Northern Lights, photographer Tiina Trmnen captures a series of breathtaking self-portraits. Wanderer is a project that shows how minuscule an individual human being is when compared to the vast universe that encircles our planet, touching upon themes of both space and time. In working with nature, Trmnen found isolated locations in the Arctic Lapland wilderness of northern Finland, where an average of only two people can be found every square kilometer.

Surrounded by uninhabited landscapes, the Finnish photographer was able to find a significant connection between the loneliness and the impressiveness of her environment. In the project’s description, Trmnen accurately describes the setting as a “cold vast emptiness but something so beautiful.”
