Taxi Fabric is a project that’s creatively transforming Mumbai’s many taxis into mobile works of art. “Taxis in India, particularly in Mumbai, are not only the most convenient form of transport but have also become an iconic piece of culture,” the team wrote on their website. “Although much attention is given to each taxi by its driver – to make it stand out from his competitors – very little thought is given to the fabric used on the seats. The designs that cover the taxi seats are often functional and forgettable and with the outstanding design talent Mumbai has to offer, this shouldn’t be the case.”
Thanks to their successful Kickstarter, Taxi Fabric’s creatives were able to make their transportation-related dream a reality. After gathering a group of up-and-coming Indian designers, they allowed them to let their imaginations run wild. These artists came up with beautifully cultural designs, which were then printed on fabric and stitched onto the taxi’s inside. The colorful finished products prove that one can find inspiration in the most unlikely places. “5 months ago we printed our first Taxi Fabric,” the Taxi Fabric team wrote on Kickstarter. “As we fitted this beautiful new interior into our first participating Mumbai Taxi we all looked at each other and knew we were onto something. This wasn’t going to be a one off – this was going to be big.”
