The Idol Kids of Today

Although he was only born in 1975, British artist Antony Micallef is like an old man who doesn’t thinks much about our youth. He created four nickel-plated bronze 13 ft sculptures and displayed them in front of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

In the series titled The Idol Kids of Today, one boy is seen frozen with a video game controller in hand, while another one is thoroughly content with a happy meal in his lap. Perhaps the most startling is the one of the little girl whose face is made up of nothing but weapons.

Micallef appeared on the art scene in 2000, winning second prize in the BP Portrait Award competition. Since then, his mix of political imagery fused with contemporary expressionism has won him worldwide acclaim. It’s reported that collectors of his work include A-list celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as well as fellow contemporary artists like Damien Hirst.
