If you’re an art fanatic, then maybe you nurture a dream of one day seeing a piece of your own displayed and admired in a famous art gallery. Tezi Gabunia’s new, interactive installation allows you to experience this thrill…kind of. Through four different models of world famous galleries, his installation Put Your Head into Gallery, literally allows one to become a feature of the exhibit.
The project includes four miniature recreations of Saatchi Gallery, The Louvre, Tate Modern, and Gagosian Gallery—each one respectively features the work of Gabunia (himself), Peter Paul Rubens, Damien Hirst, and Roy Lichtenstein. The installation aims make the art scene accessible to everyone by bringing the prominent buildings to the audiences, as opposed to the other way around. Through his work, Gabunia further explores the idea of falsification and hyperrealism within the art world. Created using laser cutting technology and PVC and plexiglass, his dioramas allow anyone to glance into the hallowed halls and commandeer a spot on the wall of the famed exhibits.
Gabunia has made a name for himself with his artistic reflections regarding authenticity versus falsities within the contemporary world. Focusing on the virtualization of the artistic process, his work attempts to industrialize the production of art, cutting out the role of the artist as the singular creator. With this questioning approach in mind, Put Your Head into Gallery continues a search to explore what differentiates art that is destined to be displayed from the rest of the visual realm.
