With a speciality in surrealism, Lisbon-based artist Luisa Azevedo creates delightfully dreamy composite photographs. Her clever collection of surreal photography showcases her talent for turning unexpected objects, figures, and locations into seamlessly surreal scenes.
Azevedo crafts each composite using real-life photographs. Often taken by the artist herself, these photos range from depictions of animals and plants to landscapes and buildings. Once she has identified which images she’d like to stitch together, she expertly merges them into creative, collage-like compositions. Each creation offers a glimpse into the artist’s imagination, where people parachute with cacti, larger-than-life squirrels scale skyscrapers, and birds of paradise are fauna, not flora.
In addition to the wonderfully creative content of her work, Azevedo has also mastered the art of composition and color. Each piece appears balanced, which is no easy feat in the busy realm of collage work. Additionally, this crisp, clean aesthetic is accentuated by the muted color scheme evident in much of her surreal photography. This pastel-inspired palette also emphasizes the dream-like quality of the artist’s creative vision.
At just 18 years old, Azevedo has already acquired a large and loyal following on Instagram, where she posts much of her portfolio. Ultimately, her fanciful approach to her craft can be aptly summarized by the short and sweet description she has provided on the platform: “I don’t want realism. I want magic.”
