Nestled in the craggy hills of the Costa Brava, Sunflower House is a stunning vacation home that offers its residents sweeping views of the Mediterranean. Designed by the Barcelona and Mexico-based Cadaval & Solà-Morales, its petal design is an innovative way to bring more light—and picturesque views—inside.
The Sunflower House is located on the Cap de Creus peninsula in Port de la Selva, Spain. One of the most beautiful areas in the country, it also suffers from extreme wind that can reach up to 112 miles per hour. Taking this into consideration, the architecture firm designed a well thought out home that takes advantages of the site’s positive attributes, while minimizing its negatives.
The home sprawls across two levels, which allows more sunlight to stream into the home and diversify the views. Its green roof provides interior temperature regulation and meets the highest environmental standards. “The configuration of the house, based on the openings to the different environments that surround it, defines unique relationships with the water and the mountain—its real asset,” writes the award-winning firm.
In breaking up the home’s facade, it’s possible to take in the panorama from slightly different angles—each view designed to give the best possible sightline of the horizon. Its clean, minimalist interior allows nature to provide the ultimate home accessory and with plenty of terraces to lounge on, as well as an infinity pool, residents can spend endless hours soaking in the environment.
Sunflower House, built on a rocky peninsula on the Costa Brava, uses its architecture to give enhanced views of the surrounding panorama.
The home’s minimalist interior allows the natural environment to be the star feature.
Architecture firm Cadaval & Solà-Morales also built the home to withstand the high-velocity winds that run through the area.
