Strange Dreams and Haunting Nightmares (14 photos)

If you haven’t heard the name Anthony Goicolea, you probably will soon. The Brooklyn-based Cuban-American artist was recently plucked by designer Calvin Klein to create some artistic window displays. Called “one of the most extensive collaborations between an artist and a designer company,” the short film Golcolea has created will serve as the anchor piece in Calvin Klein’s window displays. You can see that magical but slightly spooky video, called Middle Night, here. Goicolea first busted out into the art scene back in 1999. He’s a jack of all trades – moving easily from one medium to the next – drawing, painting, photography, and video. Looking through his website, I was captivated by his photos where he “digitally composites elements culled from different locations and combines them into new topographies.” Basically, Goicolea takes familiar elements like telephone wires, power lines, factories and plants them in strange surrounding. He purposely creates these dark and moody scenes or what he calls “barely inhabitable worlds.” It’s cinematic, it’s a little scary, but mostly (and quite literally), it’s out of this world.
