Starbucks Opens Store in a Century-Old Traditional Korean Home

Starbucks Daegu in South Korea

A striking new Starbucks has opened in Daegu, South Korea. Set inside a timber hanok, which has over 100 years of history, the store is a revolutionary transformation of this traditional Korean home. By keeping the integrity of the structure—including the wood beams, rafters, floors, and roof—and modernizing the interior, the store strikes the perfect harmony between respecting the past and looking forward to the future.

The light-filled interior has an open floor plan typical of hanoks found in the southern part of the country. Dry gardens are incorporated into the floor and about 20 seats were also installed into the parquet so people can sip their coffee while looking at the outdoor garden.

Music is also integral to the space, with Starbucks Korea announcing a partnership with Bang & Olufsen. As the city of Daegu is considered a music capital, it is only fitting that the store incorporates a custom Bang & Olufsen sound system. One corner of the store has been designated as a special music-listening space, where people can enjoy their drinks surrounded by music. And, at the same time, the location is also selling a limited edition Bang & Olufsen + Starbucks Beosound Explore portable Bluetooth speaker.

To celebrate the opening of the new location, Starbucks Daegu will be playing different music from other stores through the end of November. In addition, every weekend will also feature a listening experience focusing on different genres of music.
