Spectacular Hanging Cups Installation

After you drink coffee, what do you do with your paper cup? Though most of us opt to chuck the cup into the trash bin, artist Gwyneth Leech has chosen to create an innovative art installation. Leech, who lives and works in New York, keeps her empty coffee cup each day and doodles all around it, creating wild and appealing designs.

After washing out each cup, she marks the date, location, and type of drink consumed on the bottom. It’s her way of documenting a social moment, like many today do through social networking and sharing outlets like Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Flickr. As a result of this interactive realization, Leech indulges in the photographic interpretations of her work, sharing many images she finds that have undergone the personal filtering modifications of each photographer. This idea of sharing and recreating works hand in hand with her installment’s idea of reusing, finding art and expressing creativity in everything.

Leech’s installation entitled Hypergraphia is on display at the Flatiron Prow Art Space in New York until December 31, 2011. The fantastic thing about this exhibition is that the work is viewable 24 hours a day. Also, it is constantly changing and growing because Leech will be adding newly designed cups, five days a week, until the end of the display.
