Beautifully Designed Furniture Reveals Much More Than Meets the Eye

Sebastian Errazuriz is a Chilean-born, New York City-based designer whose stunning furniture cleverly transforms into something completely unexpected. Using woods like maple and bamboo, he crafts pieces that can look fairly innocuous but be manipulated in ways rarely seen in cabinet building. Each work opens to reveal its own special feature.

One of his pieces called Explosion looks, at first glance, as nothing more than a tidy and beautiful credenza. But with a gentle push of either side, its rails slide open and it mutates into a fractured exterior that can be configured in multiple ways. Explosion now lives up to its name.

Another incredible design by Errazuriz makes an opposite first impression that Explosion does. From the outside, Magistral Chest looks like a prickly, impenetrable structure. Once you start to explore it, however, you’ll find that the pointed quills slide from side to side and reveal a set of drawers.

These pieces are more than what meets the eye, and this concept plays an integral part of Errazuriz’s work. “It’s important to me that a project consist of just a little twist,” he tells art critic Christian Viveros-Faune, “because I ultimately want people to see the obvious, the everyday differently.”
