Moms Are Turning Their Breast Milk Into Dazzling Jewelry as a Sentimental Keepsake of Motherhood

The act of breastfeeding is an experience that’s both intimate and personal, although once it’s done, there is little in the way of tangible mementos to remember it by. Kelly Howland of Sacred Legacy Arts, however, has an answer to this conundrum by providing an unusual-yet-beautiful way to commemorate this fleeting period of time. She handcrafts gemstones made from breast milk that are then placed into a ring or necklace setting.

To turn the liquid into a hardened material, Howland uses “chemicals to professionally preserve the breast milk so it can be included into a jeweler’s-grade resin.” Afterwards, it’s treated like a regular stone and set into gold, bronze, or silver bands. On its own, the gem has an ivory or off-white tint, but Howland can also add colored flecks for some vibrant dazzle.

A Sacred Legacy Arts keepsake symbolizes all of the struggles and triumphs that come with breastfeeding, as well as the child (or children) nourished. When the wearer looks at it, they can be reminded of their strength and the bonds forged. But for those who aren’t aware of the gem’s origins, the jewelry simply appears as a stylish accessory.

In addition to its breast milk jewelry, Sacred Legacy Arts also specializes in other “DNA keepsake” pieces that can be made out of a loved one’s hair, ashes, umbilical cord, and fabric.
