Canadian artist Ruth Oosterman collaborates with her 2-year-old daughter Eve to produce beautiful paintings filled with a combination of energetic, abstract lines and gorgeous details. For each piece, the young girl first doodles on a page with black ink. Oosterman chats with her daughter as she creates to get a sense of the ideas behind the lines. She then uses her own vivid imagination to transform the abstract jumbles into vibrant paintings of animals, landscapes, and portraits.
The combination of chaos with realism is the foundation for the self-taught artist’s paintings as she works to balance a structured realism with the freedom of imagination. Although she transforms Eve’s work into something new, Oosterman finds it important to maintain her daughter’s original lines as the foundation of the work. “One of the most important thing to me about collaborating with Eve is to make sure her vision is included and the finished piece still contains portions and shapes of her original piece,” explains Oosterman.
