UK-based sculptor Ruth Moilliet uses her art to preserve the plant kingdom. The artist, who is inspired by the beauty of flowers, works with metal and glass to retain the visual life of her botanical subjects. From hydrangeas and dahlias to cow parsleys and carnations, Moilliet manages to capture the vivacious image of flowers encased in a coated mild steel box. There’s something both science fictional and enchanting about it.
Using several sheets of float glass, the artist layers petals and flowers between each of the panes, pressing and preserving them. Though this was originally the sole method for the series, Moilliet’s website suggests that “some works incorporate real flowers and others photographic or sandblasted images.” Essentially, the collection of sculptures are more of a documentation and preservation of memory of these British wildflowers than a scientific form of conservation.
