Vibrant Submerged Figures Greet Surreal Mirror-Like Liquid Portals

Montreal-based photographer Robin Cerutti captures alluring underwater portraits in his series titled Mirrors. The images, photographed in vibrant crystal-clear pools, were shot sideways. This simple rotation makes a strong visual impact–the water no longer floats above Cerutti’s models. Instead, it faces them directly, as if they’re about to walk through a surreal liquid portal towards another universe.

Lighting was an important consideration when producing Mirrors. Cerutti shot the photos in sunlight and added special lamps above the water. This cast a brilliant illumination onto the models, and their soft shadows demonstrate the power of perspective. Cerutti angled the subjects’ shade towards the perceived “ground,” making us forget that the water is actually askew.
