Steve Irwin’s 13-Year-Old Son is an Exceptionally Talented Wildlife Photographer

Growing up surrounded by nature, it’s no surprise that Steve Irwin’s son Robert also has great affection for wildlife. But at just 13 years old he’s also making a name for himself as an incredibly talented wildlife photographer. And, of course, there’s no shortage of subjects for him to shoot at the Australia Zoo and Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in northern Australia.

From startlingly close-up portraits to action shots, Robert Irwin‘s photographs capture the spirit and personality of each animal. His love of photography is a tradition passed down from his father. “My dad was also an amazing photographer,” Robert tells us in an email. “He always carried his camera with him on his travels and photographed some spectacular wildlife.”

And now, the teenager is carrying on the tradition, already having his images published in newspapers and magazines around the world and shown in galleries across Australia. The honor of these accolades isn’t lost on Irwin. “I have been so honored for my photographs to be commended in competitions and showcased around the globe. I hope to continue to inspire people through photography and reach an even larger audience and hopefully encourage others to protect our precious planet.”

By photographing wildlife around the globe, Irwin also shows his versatility. He moves easily from powerful underwater photography to black and white portraits that capture the elegance of his subjects. Behind the scenes images show how fearlessly he moves to get the perfect shot, unafraid to get up close and personal with these stunning creatures.

Through his work, he hopes to spur others—especially children—to get involved with wildlife conservation and gain further respect for the planet. “My goal with photography is to inspire people to connect with our natural world and want to save it. Wildlife conservation and photography go hand-in-hand, as a single photograph can convey an individual animal’s emotion and tell an incredible story. It is imperative that everyone—especially kids—love and respect wildlife and nature and be passionate about protecting it for future generations.”

Robert Irwin’s photo prints are available for purchase through the Australian Zoo.
