Architects Design Dynamic Façade With Rotating Bricks for Maximum Sunlight and Privacy

Revolving Bricks Serai by Farhad Mirzaie and A.P.P Architects & Associates

Typical glass office buildings often struggle finding a way to allow natural light in while maintaining privacy. Architect Farhad Mirzaie and A.P.P Architects & Associates have constructed a parametric brick screen that does both. Designed for an office building in the Iranian city of Arak, Revolving Bricks Serai uses an algorithim to define the rotation of bricks on the façade.

The gradual rotation of the bricks creates a rippling effect that reads differently from whichever angle it is viewed. The appearance is enhanced further with another carefully considered detail. The short ends of each brick are colored with shades of blue and green to highlight the effect of the rotation.

Parametric design is a popular trend in contemporary architecture. It helps designers to achieve futuristic forms and a high level of control over a series of design moves. Bricks are an especially useful medium for parametric design tools because the small units can be manipulated in a variety of ways; including pushing, pulling, and (in this case) rotating.
