Spanish graphic arts studio Reskate Arts & Crafts wows unsuspecting passersby with their innovative glow-in-the-dark murals. For the past few years they’ve been painting walls with photo luminescent paint that can glow for up to 12 hours after exposure to light. This means that when the lights go down, their work completely transforms, revealing surprises to the viewer.
Most of their work has taken place in and around Zaragoza, though last summer they went on the road to Romania to complete a mural titled Unawareness. After dark, a planet morphs into a diving helmet, as a nod to the historic shift in interest about deep sea exploration in favor of the space race between the United States and the USSR.
Another piece, where a loaf of bread reveals a bread knife, was created for the #GeneraciónNoHunger campaign by Action Against Hunger. “The intervention on a wall invites us to think about the power of involvement to find effective solutions against hunger,” the artists write. “These days we have, more than ever, the knowledge, means and tools to do so. We are the first generation that can put an end to hunger.”
The collective has successfully married this delightful technique with thought-provoking artwork. While spectators may initially marvel at the surprise, close observation asks them to explore the deeper meaning, which moves it well beyond the novelty of execution.
