Award-winning animal photographer Alex Cearns (founder of Houndstooth studio) takes portraits of dogs around the world and shares their stories. Some are rescues, and the focus is on their pre- and post-adoption, while others are beloved pets. The Perth-based photographer’s collection of dog portraits have been compiled into a new book, Perfect Imperfection: Dog Portraits of Resilience and Love, showcasing a range of pups captured during their most endearing moments. “I love every animal I have the privilege of photographing, but those perceived as different hold a special place in my heart. These are the canines who have lost a leg, been born without eyes, or are still showing the scars of former abuse,” says Cearns.

The photographer’s subjects include an adorable puppy named Pip, who was rescued from the streets of Bali. At the time, she had lost all of her fur due to mange, but today she’s healthy and living with a loving family. “Bali Pip was a natural and loved being in the spotlight. She was a cute, inquisitive and playful pup. Her images later went viral and people from all over the world fell in love with her,” recalls Cearns. Other featured dogs include Raul the French bulldog, who takes partial paralysis in his stride, and Dotty, who lost her left eye due to melanoma. The uplifting series not only captures each canine’s unique beauty, but also his/her strong spirit and determination to survive, despite any afflictions. Cearns says, “They push on, always, wanting to be included and involved in everything as much as they can, and as much as an able-bodied pet does.”

Perfect Imperfection: Dog Portraits of Resilience and Love is available on March 19, 2018. With every sale, part of the proceeds will be donated to the Australian Animal Cancer Foundation to help them towards finding a cure for canine cancer. To pre-order your copy, head to the booktopia website.
