Earlier this year, Melbourne based agency ENESS received a phone call from Red Bull. The world’s leading energy drink company asked them this one simple but very complicated question. “How would you like create your extreme projections for some of the best riders in the world?” Three years ago, ENESS first turned their projectors onto snow at a snowfield in Australia. They described it as “carving the slopes by day and lighting the ice by night, transforming snow into otherworldly forms.” To them, “It seemed like an obvious direction when snowboarding and art are in your blood.” At 9,000 feet on a cold, Mammoth mountain night, Red Bull and ENESS took extreme sports to new, artistic heights with Red Bull Off the Planet. Using infrared cameras, they tracked the riders as they jumped over a 21′ inflatable sphere. They then used 3D projection mapping to transform the snowy terrain into several stunning scenes. “Another technical feat worth mentioning is that our projectors were 300 feet above the recommended operating altitude,” ENESS adds. “That’s how we earned our rep. as extreme projectionists, and Red Bull earned our respect for allowing us to live the dream.” Watch the whole video to see what went into making this project and then to see how it all came together.
