Some places are naturally colorful, but others need a little help. To combat a previously drab landscape, a town in Indonesia has painted over 200 houses in a vibrant mixture of hues that electrify the hillside. Called Kampung Pelangi, the name literally translates to Rainbow Village—and it’s certainly living up to its moniker. The destination is quickly becoming a favorite place for Instagrammers thanks to the technicolor walls and creative 3D murals. As many visitors can attest, the paintings make for the perfect backdrop for share-worthy portraits.
The rainbow art was a planned initiative by the Indonesian government. They gave the town a $22,000 USD makeover as part of a rebranding project. In addition to cloaking building exteriors in Lisa Frank-inspired palettes and polka-dot patterning, they also changed the name from Kampung Wonosari. This was in hopes of bringing more tourists to the area and making its fame an international one. The initiator of the project, Slamet Widodo, told The Jakarta Post, “Hopefully Kampung Pelangi will be the biggest [colorful city] in Indonesia.” It looks like it’s well on its way!
The Indonesian town of Kampung Pelangi, aka Rainbow Village, has went from drab to fab with a technicolor paint job.
The government spent about $22,000 to paint over 200 houses in a bevy of bright hues, patterns, and murals. So, it’s no surprise that this is quickly becoming a hot spot for Instagram photos.
