Meet the Pumi—the newest dog breed for us to collectively “awww” over. On June 22, the American Kennel Club announced that this energetic herding dog is the 190th breed to join the ranks of America’s oldest purebred dog registry. The new honor, aside from formal recognition, allows the corkscrew-fur canine to compete in the Westminster Kennel Club contest that happens every February.
Originating from Hungary, Pumi dogs have been in the United States for the past two decades. They’re considered quick learners with a lot of spunk, which makes them perfect for the farm life: specifically, corralling chickens and goats. With this reputation, they are definitely not the type to laze on the couch—experts say they require a lot of exercise and stimulation in order to keep them happy.
