Designer Transforms Discarded Skateboards into One-Of-A-Kind Guitars

San Francisco-based design student Nick Pourfard combines two of his passions–skateboarding and music–into Prisma Guitars, a company that recycles old skate decks, transforming them into beautiful instruments. Each piece is handcrafted by the self-taught woodworker, and he uses anywhere from four to 44 skateboards in the creation of one guitar. This variety produces a colorful, swirled effect on the surface, and it also ensures that every instrument looks completely unique.

With such a careful attention to craft and detail, it’s no surprise that Prisma Guitars have caught the eye of famous musicians like the band Walk Off the Earth. Poufard’s handiwork was recently featured in one of the band’s music videos, and he even had the honor of creating a custom bass for Steve Harris of Iron Maiden.

Prisma Guitars is always taking donations of old skate decks. If you’re local to the Bay area, find out how to contribute your old boards.
