Over the years, Prince has inspired many artistic tributes, including a mural by artist Christine Stein. Painted in 2016 shortly after the musician’s passing, it took on new beauty recently as the bush behind the wall went into full bloom. After Stein shared a photo of the mural’s natural transformation on Twitter, it prompted an avalanche of responses.
Stein painted the mural on a small, dead-end street in Citrus Heights, California. Perfectly placing it under a round tree, the sprouting leaves visually form Prince’s hair. The self-taught artist, who worked as an engineer until 2013 before dedicating herself to art, was inspired by Prince’s song The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. “I was listening to that song the exact moment he died–or I heard that he died on the radio. And I was really sad,” she told a local ABC affiliate in 2016. She had hoped the mural would inspire others to live out their dreams, much as she had.
And two years later, the already popular mural is still causing waves. The reds, pinks, and beiges of the tree in bloom perfectly frame Prince’s face, giving extra vibrancy to the portrait of the Purple One. Interestingly, this is the first time the tree has bloomed. In fact, Stein didn’t even realize it could flower. She believes extra mulch accidentally dropped in front of the mural must have given the tree the extra nutrients it needed to flower.
Stein has prints available of the mural, both with and without flowers, via Etsy.
This tribute to Prince was first created in 2016, but has now taken on new life thanks to these blooming flowers.
That’s awesome Christine, I see the #Prince bush has grown quite a bit as well besides the beautiful flowering! I love it #PRINCE4EVER 😎💜 pic.twitter.com/guLGD6ngG8
