Whether you’re planning a trip to Tokyo or simply trying to impress the chef at your local sushi restaurant, learning Japanese just became a lot more fun and accessible with Nihongo Flashcards from Pompette. The Flashcards are constantly updated through an Instagram account and cover various themes depending on the seasons and major events occurring in Japan. Currently, Japanese street foods are featured as useful words for the summer festivals. Examples include everything from French fries and chocolate covered bananas, to more exotic eats like grilled squid and cherry blossom rice cakes.
The Flashcards are individually designed and illustrated by designers Hiroko Kuwada and Yuko Watatani, and are also accompanied by the Japanese characters and English pronunciations. “We started this project to create a visually fun learning tool for anybody learning Japanese or interested in Japan,” the designers told Spoon & Tamago. The Flashcards are also “a tool for Japanese people introducing Japanese foods and culture in English.”
Each image on Instagram is also paired with detailed descriptions, cultural tips, and other helpful phrases. Pompette also recently created a Facebook page for the Flashcards, and are featuring their whimsical illustrations on iPhone cases and T-shirts which can be purchased through their Society6 store.
