Showing from now till October 26 at Galerie Perrotin’s new space in New York are eight fantastically fun sculptures of feathered polar bears. The New York gallery’s inaugural show, Italian artist’s Paola Pivi’s “Ok, you are better than me, so what?,” consists of these near life-size sculptures dancing, jumping and even resisting a diaper change. They were made with urethane foam, plastic and feathers.
Pivi worked with a Canadian taxidermist to create these giant foam sculptures and then inserted the fluorescent-colored feathers in them. “I had a dream of a polar bear and a grizzly bear dancing with each other but didn’t want to kill two bears to make happy dance art,” said the India-based artist. The sculptures are on sale for $90,000.
There’s a good article about Emmanuel Perrotin, founder of Galerie Perrotin on the Wall Street Journal where they describe the art dealer as “well-regarded in the art world for being quick to identify emerging talent.”
“He was among the first non-Japanese dealers to work with Takashi Murakami, whom he brought to the Gramercy International Art Fair in 1994, and he also hosted Damien Hirst’s first solo show.”
Love that Perrotin opened his New York gallery with such a whimsical installation.
