The Cute Adventures of Oscar the Globetrotting Dog

Have you ever heard of a globetrotting dog? Meet Oscar–the Alsatian, Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, and Basset Hound mix (as revealed through a DNA test)–who just so happens to be the first dog to ever travel all across the world. It was only a few years ago that this adorable pooch was rescued by Joanne Lefson from the SPCA in Cape Town, South Africa. Ever since that fateful day in 2009, the little guy has been trekking all across the globe in an effort to bring awareness to the global problem of 475 million homeless dogs, many of whom wind up being put down in a shelter.

Lefson has taken her furry companion to some of the most populated areas of the world, snapping shots of the lovable hound in front of global landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the pyramids in Egypt, the Great Wall of China, and even atop Machu Picchu in Peru. Oscar’s passport is full of stamps to document his World Woof Tour, reaching an unfathomable number of nations that one could only hope to visit in his or her lifetime.

Sadly, Oscar met an ill fate on January 11, 2013 when he was hit by a car in California. Memorial services celebrating the life of the sweet traveling dog will be held on January 25, 2013 in Cape Town. Despite his untimely death, Oscar has clearly lived a full life and left his mark in all parts of the world, allowing people to see the wondrous “second life” of a rescue dog.
