In French photographer Olivier Ramonteu’s eerie and intriguing series Alter Ego, he captures ghostly images of twins. But, are they really twins, or just cleverly manufactured doubles of one person? We aren’t sure. Ramonteu leaves that decision up to us because he wants viewers to doubt what they see; especially since some are really identical twins and others are just imagined.
The visually-striking set of pictures are created using a mixture of contemporary and traditional photo techniques. Ramonteu captured the “couples” both digitally and with film. He produced the hazy, ethereal effect by combining multiple exposures and duplication into a single image. It results in many opaque layers made up of several photographs that seem to vibrate against each other. Grass, fog, and trees flow into the two central figures, making them appear one with gorgeous landscape. The desaturated and aged look of this series further cultivates a fantastic strangeness that leaves us wanting to know more.
