Based in the south coast of Australia, Ryan Pernofski uses his iPhone to capture the majestic beauty of breaking ocean waves. The talented surf photographer first plunged into the water with his iPhone in 2012, using Optrix underwater housing equipment to avoid it getting wet. Since then, he’s been hooked on capturing the mesmerizing flows, swells, and crests of colossal waves as they surge and crash over him.
Using Instagram to publish his images and videos, Pernofski’s favorite time to shoot is at sunrise. In a video shot one morning at 6:21am, a gigantic wave swells and crashes in slow motion beneath a opalescent sky. Describing it as “one of the most beautiful sites to see in the whole world,” the flowing seawater looks like thick, dark oil reflecting sunlit hues of pink and orange. As the huge swell crashes over him, Pernofski stays underwater to capture the peaceful kaleidoscope of color from below the surface. Describing his process, the humble photographer says, “I just dive under, hold my breath [and] hope for the best.”
In order to challenge himself further, Pernofski decided to take one photo every day, through all four seasons, regardless of the weather conditions. The resulting SEASONS photo collection has been combined into a four-part book series, which is now available to buy on Pernofski’s website.
