Dazzling Glass Sculptures Burst with Energy

Irish sculptor Norman Mooney creates delicate works that burst with energy. He designs vibrant sculptures, formed out of resin, cast glass, aluminum, and pigments, which examine the natural world around us through large-scale pieces, repetitive patterns, and experimental materials. His titles–Flower, Seed, Stars, and Sun–suggest the presence of nature in these man-made structures and Mooney provokes a thoughtful reflection about our own existence in such a complex world.

Created out of glass, the artist’s Stars series hangs on the walls, absorbing and reflecting light like actual stars in the sky. All of his pieces, ranging in size from 2 to 12 feet wide, represent life and death in nature. The Brooklyn-based artist says, “The sculptures deal with the eternal dichotomy of the present, the immediate moment when we are ultimately becoming and eternally dying at precisely the same time, I am looking to understand the idea of something much larger than ourselves, than our capacity to see, that is ever present, persistent and constantly in motion.”
